RELTD Ep 115: Remembering Denny O’Neil

Click the link below for the episode on The Batman Universe

Terence and Rob talk about some of their favorite memories and stories that Denny was involved with either as a writer or an editor. They also talk about the unreleased interview they had with Denny, which the show opens with a brief excerpt from. Join us as we pay our respects and geek out about the legendary Denny O’Neil!

Loss and Wonder:

This post along with the next few are a month or two old, so lets catch up episode by episode.

Saying 2020 has been a struggle for everyone is an under statement. My family alone has seen a number of deaths this year. I had an uncle pass away at the same time as Denny. He (my uncle Roger) was also the one as a kid that I talked to about all of this geeky stuff, and especially Batman and Robin. Terence says in the episode that Denny is like Tim's grandpa. While I agree with that I also got an uncle vibe from Denny too. Honestly you would inter change my uncle with Denny and the personalities I think... from what i have read about Denny sounds like my uncle. My uncles passing is what started me "missing my own deadlines" for this blog.

After the funeral for my Uncle Roger I sat down to write this a few times, and I just could not crack what I wanted to say. What do you say about someone you don't really know. I know my uncle helped me with some of my earliest comic book knowledge. We would read the mini Super Powers Action figures comics together. I still have the mini comics to this day.

(pictured are the Robin ones)

For me Denny has always just been there. I really got into comic collecting literally right after I saw Batman 89. I bought Batman 436 (Year 3) I was hooked. Sure I had picked up comics before this time but not like this. The first trade I bought was Batman: A Death in the Family. The forward in the book was so well written and just grabbed you. Who was this Denny O'Neil guy? I like his writing. He was all over the Batman books as editor. Once in a while as writer. He was in all of the Wizard magazine interviews back then. Later on he was on a bonus content to VHS and DVD releases. Just like my uncle, he was always there giving us encouraging words on whats going on in the Batman Universe and our own world at large at times these characters.

I really paid attention when Tim Drake was created. there again in a forward to A Lonely Place of Dying trade paperback there was another great intro from Denny. He talked bout the creation of Tim Drake and the reasons why. You felt invested in the story even before you read it... something that's lacking these days i must say. The creative teams he placed on all of the Batfamily titles was just awe inspiring if you look back at it. Adams, Dixon, Lyle, Breyfogle, Grant, Nolan, Moench, Grummett, Balent, and Kitson just to name a few. That's a Legacy if I ever saw one.

Denny knew what his writers needed and more immortality sometimes knew what they didn't. He knew that if he picked the right creators the rest would work out. My uncle would say "if i give people the right tool, they can dig their own hole, i don't need to show them how." I feel that was Denny's approach. Set the stage, then let the team deliver the goods. You can read all of the Batman titles under his watch from Batman 414 to 574 (also including all other Batfamily titles) and it reads as one complete thought. Denny was the editor for all of it. That is why in the 90's when all the craziness of the 90's was going on. Batman didn't quite feel like that. It felt timeless.

Now i know your saying Rob he did so much more than that. But this was my story with Uncle Denny. He helped tell stories that I will cherish until the day I meet my uncle Roger again. Every time I open any Batman book I will think of the massive legacy Denny has left. Starting in the 70's with Neil Adams and into the 2000's. For me, Denny gave me my favorite character in literature, he inspired me to talk write and create things about this character. Tim Drake. The podcast you listen to, to the blog page your reading. If it was't for Denny... would any of us be reading this?

"At this writing, in June of 1993, Tim/Robin is probably as popular as Batman himself. I think its a distinction he deserves and I'll argue that the stories in this book prove it. they'll show you Tim's rites of passage-his entrance  into the savage and exotic world of Batman and his first adventure with out his seasoned partner. It's one of the oldest tails-the journey out of a child's innocence into the frightening arena of adulthood-and, because it's told with imagination in the cadences and contexts of whats happening outside your window, its as fresh as what will happen there tomorrow.
Third time we really got it right."
                               Denny O'Neil
June 1993 (Robin: Tragedy & Triumph trade paperback)

                                                                                                         Thank you Denny!

ELYJ Ep 15 "The Bendis Dump" Part 2

Click the link below for the episode on The Batman Universe

Part two of the Bendis Dump is here, which will get the boys caught up with the current Young Justice series. Jay and Rob continue their discussion from the previous episode with issues #13-14 as well as take a look at the appearance of the team in Action Comics #1020-1021. They also discuss the forward momentum of these books while looking forward to the next episode which dives back to the 1998 version of the team.

On The Surface:
The Bendis dump as they were called. Theses were two episodes that were books that had piled up since the pandemic and we thought rather do two issues at a time we would just we would just dump all of the issues on the podcasting table and cover them over two issues. What we found out was that over the two episodes we kinda did actually dump on the books a bit especially Action Comics in this episode.
Starting with the main two books being Yong Justice 13 and 14.

Here we are in 2020 and we have 14 issues of the series that launched in January of 2019. It has taken a year and a half to get us to the point where we are just now learning about what happened to teams memory in this "Rebirth"era Universe. Now I know this is 14 months of story telling but that is 14 issues/months worth of story telling. Bendis has given us back characters that we have not seen in years... some since 2002. I'm looking at you Arrowette. Speaking of the classic book let's recap who is here in 2020 on this team. We have Tim Drake Robin.. now Drake... don't get me started I'm just glad Tim is in a book! Conner Kent Superboy, Cassie Sandsmark Wonder Girl and Bart Allen Impulse! The core of the original team from 1998. That's not all Bendis added in Amy Winston aka Amethyst, plus he gave us a few new characters to play with, Jenny Hex, Teen Lantern and Naomi. All three of whom are created by Bendis himself. Now on the surface this is great! I was over the moon with this book. I still really like this book but the saying "this dose not scratch the surface" might as well say "don't scratch the surface, there's nothing underneath".

The book has been a feast for the eyes with Pat Gleason leading the charge, boy do i miss his art, then his replacement with John Timms. The art leaps off the page (a few exceptions with some guest artists but still good) and it makes you want to read more! There in lies part of the problem with Bendis. Jay and I have said a few times on the show that he's showing us but hes not telling us. If he is telling us it has taken so long to tell us something that i have forgotten what he's been saying. Going back to the surface theme again. I think Bendis has a surface knowledge of these characters, but it feels like there is not much more than that in the 14 issues. Now maybe he does have more knowledge of them but he has not doe a great job telling us that so far. I feel we spent way to long dancing around the Mulitiverse before we got them home. Now is Bendis expecting us to bring 20 years of history along with these characters into this book? Maybe but the idea is there... on the surface, but its not formed. It's action and set pieces and not much story... but not all the time. There are moments where he really delivers on story but it gets clouded from all of "set dressing" if you will.

Issues 13 and 14 lead us right to the door step of why don't they remember what happened to themselves before Flashpoint I'm assuming... again it's cloudy... on the surface. We have been givin more heroes in these two issues with Arrowette (finally), Aqualad, Sideways and Spoiler, plus Dial H for Hero (don't think they are permanent) and the Wonder Twins (also probably won't stay). All to help do a thing. WHAT IS THE THING?! Oh to figure out where Conner has been twice?

I say again, I am enjoying the book. It could be SO much much better... and should be. David Walker has been in to help right with Bendis on the last few issues. Is this to help or take over or... well maybe to help with the surface? We'll have to wait and seen i guess. See you next month where it's the 1998 book and that surface is full! I called the the show Everyone Loves Young Justice because most people do love Young Justice, the 1998 book, the wonderful animated series and tie-in comics. I just want to see it here too, and not just on... well you know.

RELTD Ep 114

It’s time to give you another Robin 80th Episode with a very special guest former TBU contributor Mr. Clinton Robinson of the Coffee and Comics podcast (@CoffeeComicsBlg). For this episode Clinton chose to go back to the always fun Showcase issues with Showcase ’93 issues 11 and 12. This takes us back to the Knightfall era where Dick and Tim work together to solve two cases that connect to each other if you have been following along the Showcase issues from 1993. So get your coffee pot ready as we celebrate 80 years of Robin!

Artist: Bob McLeod
Letterer: Ken Bruzenak
Colorist: Tom J. McCraw
Cover: George Perez

I said it in the episode that I have had this issue for 27 years and I had no idea that Perez did the cover. What am I stupid?! To be honest I was just picking up the books and reading them. I was not really invested just yeat on who the artist were on books like this. By this time next year (1994) I would be totally obsessed with who the artist and writers were. You could slot this in right after Detective Comics 668, although the plot line calls back to Showcase issues 5 & 6 but that's going back to May of 1993... ok needless to say it's comics and this happens when we tell you it happens.

This was my "Golden Age of Comics" I was reading comics pretty solidly since 1989, of course Batman '89 was a huge push to read. It was Knightfall that captivated me and got me to come back to the shop week after week. I was in it like I had never been before. So because of that I was trying new things and more importantly, i was gonna follow Tim Drake in comics wherever he went. So picking up issues of Showcase was so cool, I got these extra little stories with my favorite character, plus other characters that i "knew"... but did I really? This is how you fall down the rabbit home in comics, and I loved it! I'm glad Clinton picked these two books for the 80th Anniversary!
